A Giant Leap for MetaLib: The New Primo Service

Gilad Gal, Senior Product Manager

Ex Libris recently announced a new Primo service for MetaLib customers. With this service, MetaLib institutions can provide their users with a Primo interface that is branded for their institution, and directly connected to the Primo Central Index of scholarly materials. Users can also extend their searches using MetaLib—all within the Primo user interface. The service is undergoing beta testing at a number of MetaLib institutions and has delivered outstanding results. We have now begun to provide the service to many more institutions worldwide, beginning with libraries in the Americas, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

The Primo service for MetaLib offers a next-generation discovery experience for library users and transforms three key aspects of searching:

  • Results are displayed instantaneously.
  • Virtually all the resources commonly required by researchers are covered by the Primo Central Index and will therefore be available to customers using the Primo service for MetaLib.
  • Top-quality relevance ranking is based on Primo’s proven algorithms.

As we announced earlier this year, libraries can also add the Primo Central Index as a MetaLib resource, rather than implementing the Primo service for MetaLib. The latest MetaLib KnowledgeBase revision includes an adapter for the Primo Central Index. MetaLib customers can register for this option via the MetaLib 4.4 administrative interface.

We recommend that you access both the Primo Central Index and your MetaLib system via the Primo service for MetaLib customers. To subscribe to this service, which is provided to MetaLib customers without any additional license, maintenance, or hosting fees, contact your Ex Libris account manager.

To everyone in the MetaLib customer community, welcome to the high-speed Primo world of plentiful relevant resources!
