Using the bX Recommender Service

If you have shopped on Amazon.com, you know how to use bX!

Using bX recommendations is easy and straightforward.  As a matter of fact, you have probably used similar services on commercial websites such as Amazon.com.

Focused solely on the scholarly domain, bX Recommendations are based on actual usage data.  It is the first service to provide highly granular recommendations that point to specific scholarly articles.

bX recommendations are delivered directly to your familiar scholarly search environment, so you can immediately start benefiting from the service without installing anything on your computer or any training, not even a new login.

You have probably seen the feature “Customers Who Viewed This Item Also Viewed” on Amazon or other online shopping sites.  In a similar fashion, once your library signs up for the bX service, you will see the bX recommendation list showing for each article.

Explanation of page:

1. Title – The original article for which recommendations are offered.
2. Recommended articles – The list of recommendations in APA citation style. The default number of recommendations shown on the SFX menu is 3. This can be configured locally.
3.  Full-text availability – If the recommended article is available in full-text in your library, then the article title will be hyperlinked so the user can go directly to the full text of that article.

4.  Full-text icon – A full-text icon can optionally be displayed as a second visual clue to the availability of full text for the article.

5. SFX services for recommended article – Clicking on the SFX button for a recommended article will open a new SFX menu and show services for this article including recommendations where available.
6. Save citations – Recommended articles can be selected and downloaded by the user into  their favorite citation management tool such as RefWorks or EndNote.
7. View More – If more than 3 recommendations are given for an article then an option is given to expand the menu to see all recommendations.

There is nothing you need to do differently to get the bX recommendations.  As you search for scholarly articles, books, or digital material through your library search interface, bX will automatically work in the background to present you with the most relevant recommendations.
