SFX Implementation Options

Getting Started with SFX Server

The main task required to implement SFX is the localization of preconfigured SFX resources (Sources and Targets) in the SFX global KnowledgeBase--delivered with the SFX server. A smooth, rapid implementation depends on the availability of local library data relevant to SFX Target data, particularly ISSNs or journal titles, date ranges, and service providers for e-journal subscriptions.

Libraries using SFX can choose to implement the product with all possible services from the start or to begin working with a few services and increase the number of these as appropriate.

Libraries may choose to provide links from several specific OpenURL Sources (such as select abstracting and indexing databases and Google Scholar), which lead, via SFX, to the full text of the item, the local OPAC, document-delivery or interlibrary loan services, and Web searches. OpenURL Sources such as the library OPAC can then be added. These institutions have then broadened the range of SFX sources from which links may be presented--increasing the choice of service options.

For preconfigured SFX Sources--those already defined in the KnowledgeBase-- this stage may simply involve a call to the source’s vendor to add the SFX server address to the institution’s customer profile with the vendor; or involve some localization. Incorporating a local data repository as an SFX Source typically requires prior implementation of the OpenURL.

Ex Libris offers a range of training and professional services options to help you get started. For more information on services available in your area, please contact your local Ex Libris office.

Ongoing Maintenance

With SFX, some ongoing maintenance of the KnowledgeBase is required to ensure that the links are current. Ex Libris SFX customers have found that this task does not require additional personnel but rather saves time and resources, particularly if a library is currently configuring links in multiple systems. With SFX, all links are configured in one place and are then available to all systems.

SFX Hosting Services

Many customers use the SFX subscription service hosted by Ex Libris. These sites benefit from the full power of the SFX server, including integration into the local environment, without having to host and manage this server locally:

  • Users benefit from all the SFX services, including advanced link server features such as dynamically generated services, complex logic-display options, full statistical and reporting options, and local customization
  • Libraries can take advantage of the full range of consortial models.
  • Libraries can generate alphabetical and searchable e-journal lists automatically. MARC record generation for loading into a local catalog is optional.
  • No local server installation
  • No system administration responsibilities
  • No software maintenance tasks
  • No KnowledgeBase or software update maintenance tasks (Ex Libris carries out all updates)
  • Additional managed-services options for setup and ongoing configuration of services are available

SFX eXpress

The fully hosted and managed SFX eXpress service enables libraries to get up and running with a fast-track implementation of streamlined SFX functionality. Using the SFX eXpress setup wizard, library staff select predefined linking targets quickly and easily. Such targets may include:

  • Selective full-text repositories (e.g., Wiley journals and Elsevier journals)
  • Aggregated databases with full-text articles such as, Academic Search™ Elite and ABI/Inform®
  • Free journals - such as D-Lib Magazine and the Directory of Open Access Journals collection
  • Your OPAC, other library OPACs, or union catalogs
  • Web search engines

The SFX eXpress wizard guides library staff through a simple process to activate the library's licensed and free resources and services. This is done by selecting from a range of predefined options that enhance the linking experience. Users can start linking immediately!

Automated and Web-based tools enable staff to load local subscription information received electronically from vendors, incorporate changes in subscriptions, and generate A-Z lists of electronic journals.
