Getting Started with SFX Server
The main task required to implement SFX is the localization of preconfigured SFX resources (Sources and Targets) in the SFX global KnowledgeBase--delivered with the SFX server. A smooth, rapid implementation depends on the availability of local library data relevant to SFX Target data, particularly ISSNs or journal titles, date ranges, and service providers for e-journal subscriptions.
Libraries using SFX can choose to implement the product with all possible services from the start or to begin working with a few services and increase the number of these as appropriate.
Libraries may choose to provide links from several specific OpenURL Sources (such as select abstracting and indexing databases and Google Scholar), which lead, via SFX, to the full text of the item, the local OPAC, document-delivery or interlibrary loan services, and Web searches. OpenURL Sources such as the library OPAC can then be added. These institutions have then broadened the range of SFX sources from which links may be presented--increasing the choice of service options.
For preconfigured SFX Sources--those already defined in the KnowledgeBase-- this stage may simply involve a call to the source’s vendor to add the SFX server address to the institution’s customer profile with the vendor; or involve some localization. Incorporating a local data repository as an SFX Source typically requires prior implementation of the OpenURL.
