| Primo Central | Upgrading the search experience for your users |
The Primo Central index covers hundreds of millions of global and regional e-resources, such as journal articles and e-books, that are obtained from primary and secondary publishers and aggregators, and from open-access repositories. Hosted by Ex Libris in a cloud computing environment, Primo Central offers the largest, most varied selection of high-quality scholarly materials available today, brought to libraries by a vendor that works with any and all information providers to the benefit of the customer community.
By incorporating Primo Central in the Primo discovery and delivery process or making the index a search target of the MetaLib® portal and metasearch solution, you seamlessly extend the reach of searches and help your users find the items they need.

Primo Central enriches your users' discovery environment with the most recent and exciting innovations |
Enjoy both worlds
Primo Central enables your library to benefit from the power of an aggregated, shared index and at the same time maintain full control over the way in which your services are branded and offered to users. You define the scope of materials presented to your users and determine how results are displayed.
Primo Central for MetaLib users
By configuring Primo Central as a MetaLib search target, you create a superior search environment for your users:
- Scope of search: Unparalleled in its search scope, Primo Central covers the majority of content in most institutions’ global e-collections. And the full text of many Primo Central materials is indexed and searched as well.
- Performance: Searching in Primo Central, MetaLib retrieves results and displays them at a much quicker pace than with traditional metasearch methods.
- Result list and relevance ranking: Sophisticated Primo relevance-ranking algorithms are applied to all Primo Central search results and not just to the first few results. Thus all the results are available to the user—and “shallow” metasearch results are no longer an issue.

“Today, it’s the scope of content addressed that differentiates discovery interfaces. It’s now within reach to produce discovery interfaces that address the full breadth of a library’s collection through a single consolidated index, spanning print, articles within e-journals, and each of the individual objects within the digital collections and institutional repositories.”
Marshall Breeding, Top Technology Trends blog, July 2009 ______________________
“Network-level discovery tools include disciplinary resources and powerful search tools which dramatically improve research efficiency while also increasing effectiveness. As a result, faculty discovery practices across all disciplines have continued their marked shift to the network level.”
